Another Week

I sat down with the intention to write an update about what we’ve been doing lately. Time has been passing, but since time has no meaning anymore, it’s hard to quantify. I have a lot of half started projects going, that’s for sure.

First I decided it was time to sort through everyone’s clothes. I moved E up to 4T and G up to 3T (they’re honestly the same size, and they weigh the same, but for my sanity this is what we’re doing. Close enough. Except I also decided that they should share a closet now, and the baby will take over G’s closet. Which meant Tom might as well pull out all of the baby clothes from the attic so I could start going through those.

So if you’d like to know how that’s going, there are basically clothes everywhere. Piled high in mountains in our bedroom. Stacks of them in E’s room. The clothes that are hanging in G’s closet no one is wearing. Speaking of G’s room, I decided that it was time to decorate it, especially since he’ll be sharing with the baby eventually.

So I ordered a bunch of things and put… some of them in the room? To be fair, a lot hinges on the crib going up, but there’s no reason to put it in there yet. It would just take up space we currently use to run around in, and who knows how long it will be until the baby actually sleeps in that room. So someday that room might be decorated.. but it’s not today.

Then while I was thinking about the baby, I decided it was time to start thinking about what we’d actually need to get to be ready for this baby. Obviously we’re pretty set on clothes (which hasn’t stopped me from getting a few new things), but there are things we’ll need. We threw away E’s crib mattress because it wasn’t very firm anymore, so while we’ll use his crib again we need a mattress. We also need a new stroller for reasons that are very long and complicated, but we finally picked one out that will be compatible and hopefully work for us. Besides that, maybe some new burp cloths? I think overall we’re in good shape, and just having the list makes me feel better, and will hopefully make things easier when it’s time to actually get this stuff.

So a lot of half started projects and a house that needs to be cleaned and that pretty much sums up where Tom and I are. We’re also coming up on one year of staying home, and I’m not sure how I feel about that. I feel like I should stop and write something down, reflect.. something. But that also feels like it would take a lot of time and energy - two things I’m low on lately.

One thing I do know, E and G are honestly doing great. They don’t need much at this age, so there’s not much they’re missing out on. Sure I wish we could travel or see friends and family, but that’s impacting us (and our friends and family) more than E and G. They see us way more than they did a year ago, they’ve doubled their pets, and they’re honestly happy.

G recently found another stuffed animal that is close enough to a lamb to meet the requirements of his crib, and so he now has a goat creature (honestly Tom and I have been trying to figure out what this thing is for four years and we have no idea) among his collection.

He is happy and giggly as ever. Thrilled to be alive and part of the group. He’s fiercely independent, and will sit and try to read a book by himself, and when he gets hurt he pushes us away. He doesn’t want cuddles, he wants to deal with it himself. He just wants to be grown up, right now!

E is all about trying to figure out how the world works. He loves rules, and often will randomly walk up to me and say something like “We don’t never eat shoes!” and wait for me to confirm, that’s right, shoes aren’t food - don’t eat those! He also talks about the new baby daily. Today he told me that when the baby is here, he’d have to teach them how to use the big vacuum so they could clean up!

He always wants to work, and to be busy. Cleaning, shoveling, baking. He’s got some major fear of missing out lately, which mean he’s been skipping naps at daycare (and falling asleep in the car on the ride home) and jumping out of bed in the mornings the minute he thinks Tom or I might be awake. We’ve tried okay to wake clocks, and he already goes to bed super early, but the poor kid has black circles under his eyes daily. I’m hoping it’s just a phase, and he’ll catch up on some sleep soon.
