A Pandemic Party

Just because there isn’t going to be a big party, doesn’t mean that I can’t decorate like there would be! Picking out a theme, deciding what the cake would look like, those are things that are fun to me. I enjoy doing that for my children’s birthdays, so even though we’re in the middle of a pandemic, that didn’t stop me.

I didn’t send out birthday invites, but I still mocked up what the invite would have looked like if we did. G has been obsessed with bumblebees - partly because they’re his favorite colors (yellow and black) and partly because “I’m Bringing Home a Baby Bumblebee” is one of his favorite songs. I even attempted a bee cake (although I think the cupcakes came out better) and I’ll consider it a success since both kids identified it as a bee.

Two is fun, because G is starting to understand things like birthdays. He can open presents now, he enjoyed when we sang to him, and he definitely liked eating cake way more this time around. Having a big brother around to help him understand the excitement is definitely helping too. They feed off each other and jump up and down and clap and cheer over things like balloons, and it makes everything worth it.

We did manage a few small celebrations actually, which also felt like big wins. It’s not easy to see people these days, and nothing is guaranteed, so I’ll take whatever wins I can get. I feel like this year has made me appreciate time with friends and family so much more, and really soak in every minute that I get.

I asked G how old he was on his birthday.
G: “Three!”
Me: “No, you’re two.”
G: “Three!”
Me: “No, E is three.”
G: “No, my three!”
Me: “You’re two!”
G: “No, three!”

So the next time someone asks me if they’re twins, I guess I’ll just say yes.
