The other morning I woke you up and told that you while you were two years old that morning, you’d soon be three! And you said “No! I’m your baby always!” and then you had me scoop you up and rock you in my arms. It was just what my soul needed as I mourn all of my children growing way too fast. But then again, you always seem to know what other people need lately. I’ve dubbed you a caregiver more than once lately. You often tell me that if I’m scared it’s okay, because you’re here for me. And we all call you our Italian grandmother, since you love feeding people. It brings you so much joy, and you won’t take no for an answer. No one can come into our house without getting some of your meal fed to them. You also will seek out my water from across the house and bring it to me to make sure I’m drinking enough water.

You definitely have two sides to you, the first of which is a going full speed loud side. This side has a manic laugh that is contagious, and I swear you understand comedic timing better than some adults You can be brutally honest, with a straight face and leave me laughing. You got a pet fish at daycare that the class named South Dakota. I was asking questions about it, if it was still alive, if you had been feeding it. Then I asked if you liked the fish, to which you just said “No. I do not.”

Your other side is much slower and sweeter. This is the side that is slow to wake up, loves to bring me a blanket and ask to be wrapped like a burrito, and cuddle everything white and soft. My blanket, the cat, your baa baas. You crave one on one attention, and will seek out the person in the room with the most to give.

There are times this world seems to big and emotions are too strong for you sometimes. Although you put on a brave front, it’s often just to mask the fear. You don’t like to show your feelings, so it’s a gift when you do open up to someone. When you were a bit younger, you’d bite yourself or bang your head when things got too overwhelming, but lately we’ve been able to teach you some coping methods which seem to be working.

You’re still great at naming a song in the first few notes. Lately we’ve been listening to a lot of Christmas music, and you’ll call out “Mama it’s your favorite!” when any version of Carol of the Bells comes on - sometimes you can tell what song it is before I can.

You are such a perfect part of our family, and I love how much you love us and your siblings. Happy third birthday!
