Fall Weekend

Our new cat is howling and pacing and I’m assuming there are kittens coming, but to distract myself from that let’s recap our weekend! I have a ton of posts in draft trying to explain how we’re feeling lately and what life is like, but I’m having a hard time putting them together. So instead let’s do something easy.

Last weekend we decided to join every other person in New England and go apple picking. Seriously, on my morning team meeting today, everyone was eating apple something. My boss had just finished an apple muffin and was talking about dropping an apple pie off at his son’s house, a coworker was debating apple pancakes for breakfast, and I was telling them all about the apple coffee cake and apple chips we’d just made.

We have way too many apples.

Next time I could definitely go for the trip and just leave the apples there, but G at least is psyched about the apples. He’s the only one that’s not sick of eating them for every meal of the day. He’s also the one that was chanting “apple picking!” before we went. I think he was in heaven, and every time I turned around he had another half eaten apple in his hands.

We didn’t go to our favorite farm this time, since their fall hours are pretty much guaranteed to make you miss nap time. Instead we went to a farm that genuinely confuses me and Tom, but hey - they open at 8! Seriously, it’s all about what’s easy when you have kids this young. So we got there right at open, which was awesome since no one was there. The kids got to play on the playground (the first one since February!) and they were appropriately excited about it. There were animals there, but seeing turkeys is just not as exciting as the bunnies at our normal place. Even the llamas didn’t excite them as much as slides.

I haven’t been apple picking in a while, and I quickly realized that I’m not great at it, but it’s the perfect activity for a global pandemic. You’re outside, it’s easy to stay completely away from people, and you just run around a bunch of trees. Well, that’s how we did it anyway. G ran and ran until someone called him back, and ate all the apples that he could manage to fit in his belly. E was more into exploring the trees and eating snacks, and Tom filled our bucket. He probably picked every apple save 3-4 the kids and I managed to grab.

We also picked up a few pumpkins while we were there and even grabbed some donuts. Because there’s not much to get excited about these days, it was fun to see E&G’s reactions when we handed them each their own large donut. It definitely made up for the five minutes of torture we inflicted on them between buying them and finding a place to sit down before they could eat them. Tom had gone back to the car to drop off the pumpkins, and I was herding the kids towards a grassy spot besides a pond. G kept yelling for the donuts while I kept trying to get them to walk. I had E’s hand, but between him and the donuts, I didn’t have an extra for G. Instead I held the donuts in front of him, and carrot-on-a-stick’d him where I wanted him to go. Everyone else who happened to be anywhere on the farm just heard him crying “DONUTS!!!!” as loud as he could while he chased after them. I heard a few laughs at least.

Honestly it was a lot of fun, and worth all the apple desserts we’ll be making forever now. If it didn’t mean double the apples, I’d almost do it again next weekend. By the way… does anyone know if kittens eat apples???
