Toddler Speak

Our littlest toddler talks, quite a bit actually. You might not know this, because I haven’t posted recent videos, but he often speaks in full sentences now. He’s long had a large vocabulary of words, but now he’s starting to put them together more and more.

A recent favorite is to ask for us to put music on, and then ask the name of ever song that comes on. “What this song? What this song?” Over and over. Even if you just told him. And then he’ll ask the other adult in the room to confirm he gets the same answer. If you’re lucky, he’ll start dancing to it. He’s been unanimously named the best dancer of the house. When he feels a song, boy can he move!

He also loves to sing songs. Baby shark, Baby bumblebee, ABCs, and especially Wheels on the Bus (I’m not sure what it is about my kids and this age, but the love buses!). He’s also in love with trucks, just like his older brother. He’ll point out a car or mail truck or whatever he sees, and we’ll have the following conversation over and over:

“Dump Truck!”
”Oh you see a dump truck?”
”Wheels on it!”
”The dump truck has wheels? It does! What do they do?”
”Round ah round. Ah through da town!”

He also loves the phrase “Yeah, okay” and anytime you ask him to do something, he’ll respond with that. Hey G, would you like to go outside and play? “Yeah, okay!” Unfortunately his other favorite phrase lately is “Go away” haha. I’ve been trying to encourage him to say excuse me, or no thank you, but I still get told to go away many times a day.

To be fair, our oldest toddler might tell us that too. He’s often very clingy, but then just as quick he’ll look at me and say “I don’t need you anymore.” The things that come out of his mouth are less cute for their mispronunciations, and more just crazy and random. Even when you’re sure you know what he’s going to say, he’ll still surprise me.

“Why don’t kittens wear socks?”
”I’m not sure. What color socks should they wear?”
”Red ones!”

We try and spend a lot of time teaching him to listen to what his body is telling him. Is he tired? Hungry? Thirsty? So often we’ll ask him “What is your body telling you right now?” The other day he answered with “My body’s telling me I need a cake pop.” And honestly, I couldn’t say that mine wasn’t telling me the same thing.
